CHARACTERIZING THE IMPORTS OF SIGNIFICANT WIND GENERATION FACILITIES ON BULK POWER SYSTEMS OPERATIONS PLANNING

This project provides a first estimate of wind power's impacts on utility operating costs in a traditional vertically integrated environment through the use of planning tools well known in the electric-utility sector. The work focuses on differential operating costs arising from the variability of wind power over time periods ranging from seconds to days.

The Project Initiators: The Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG) was formed in 1989 by a group of eight utility companies, with leadership and financial support from wind energy programs at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). UWIG was formed to provide a forum for utility-to-utility education on wind power issues and experience, and to conduct outreach on progress with wind power for electric utility applications.
