Throughout its history, Horizon Wind Energy, LLC has gone through several stages and business models. The Company began in 1998 as a “build-transfer” developer known as Zilkha Renewable Energy, followed by a period of ownership by Goldman Sachs as a “developer-owner-operator” beginning in 2005. Following its acquisition on July 2, 2007 by Energias de Portugal, S.A. (“EDP”), a major Portuguese utility headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal, the Company is now owned by EDP Renováveis, S.A. (“EDPR”), making the Company a vital part of an integrated strategic renewable energy company currently ranked third in the United States in wind energy by net installed capacity.
EDP Renováveis, 25% of the shares of which are listed on the Euronext Lisbon Stock Exchange, is a leading renewable energy company that designs, develops, manages and operates power plants that generate electricity using renewable energy sources, mainly wind energy. EDP Renováveis believes that its long-term growth will be driven by favorable renewable energy market conditions, both globally and in the countries in which it operates. In addition, it believes that it will continue to benefit from positive trends in the renewable energy industry, including the accelerating technological developments in and growing economic efficiency of renewable technologies that are contributing to make renewable energy generation increasingly reliable and competitive.
