The Somerset Wind Power Project, a joint venture with Atlantic Renewable Energy (now Iberdrola), began construction in June 2001 and commenced commercial operation in October 2001. Located in Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the wind farm is on top of an abandoned strip mine, which today is mostly open pasture and cropland. The wind turbines spin on a ridgeline with elevations ranging between 2,400 feet and 2,600 feet above sea level. The 9 MW project includes six 1.5 MW turbines, enough electricity annually to supply about 2,700 homes. The Enron Wind TZ turbines sit on 210-foot-tall towers and have a rotor diameter of 231 feet.
The Somerset Wind Power Project site offers unmatched visibility. It is prominently located, only one-half mile from the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Each day, thousands of people enjoy an impressive view of the Somerset Wind Farm. |
