TOP OF IOWA WIND FARM, IOWA

Top of Iowa Wind Farm, an 80 MW facility consisting of 89 NEG Micon 900 kW wind turbines with 236 feet towers, is located on approximately 5,500 acres of corn and soybean cropland in western Worth County, Iowa. Commissioned in late 2001, Top of Iowa was a joint venture effort with Midwest Renewable Energy, who selected the site because of its excellent wind resource; close proximity to growing power markets such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison; the short distance from the project site to high-voltage transmission lines; expansion possibilities; and strong community support. The project sells all of the electricity under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with Alliant Energy of Madison, Wisconsin.

The site's vigorous wind resource enables the project to generate both renewable energy and green credits at exceptional prices. The project was completed in November 2001. The Top of Iowa Wind Farm produces enough electricity to supply about 24,000 homes annually.

The Top of Iowa Operations and Maintenance building is a recycled barn. Read the collaboration story.
